Which AI Writing Tools does ChatGPT recommend?

Updated September 7, 2026 · recomputed every week

Every week we ask ChatGPT the five questions a buyer actually asks when shopping for ai writing tools — starting with “what is the best AI writing tool?” — and count which brands come back. No brand is named in any question, so every appearance below is earned rather than prompted. This is not a review and it is not our opinion: it is a record of what one engine said, on a stated date, to a stated set of questions.

What changed this week

Compared with the standings computed on 2026-08-31:

  • ChatGPT held the top of the list at 80% of answers.
  • Notion entered the list at 30%.
  • Notion AI entered the list at 30%.
  • ChatGPT Plus entered the list at 20%.
  • Sudowrite was named in 20% of answers last week and in none of this week's.
  • ChatGPT fell 20 points to 80%.
  • Rytr fell 20 points to 20%.
  • Claude fell 10 points to 80%.

Week-to-week movement in a generative answer is normal: the same question asked twice can return two different lists. That is why a single screenshot proves nothing and a rate measured over repeated runs does. The brands that hold the top of this table across many weeks are the ones the engine has genuinely settled on.

The questions we asked

Each question was asked more than once, because generative answers vary run to run. A single screenshot proves nothing; a rate across repeated runs is a measurement.

How we measure this

Five fixed buyer-intent questions, asked of ChatGPT with web search enabled, from a US location, twice each — ten answers per category per week. We read every answer, extract the product and company names it contains, and count the share of answers that named each brand. A brand named in nine of ten answers scores 90 percent; a brand named once scores 10 percent.

The share is a mention rate, not a quality score. It says how reliably one engine reaches for a name when a buyer asks an open question. It says nothing about whether a product is good, whether it fits you, or what it costs — and we deliberately publish no rating, star or quality ranking of anyone else’s product. A brand can be excellent and absent from this table, which is the whole problem the table exists to make visible.

Because the questions never name a brand, nothing here is prompted. Extracted names are filtered so that section headings, article authors and image alt-text are not counted as products. Standings are stored one row per week rather than overwritten, which is what makes the change block above possible. The underlying numbers are public: the same JSON this page renders is served from /api/public/leaderboard on the app.

Is your brand on this list?

If it isn’t, the useful next question is whether ChatGPT names you for your category’s buying questions. Run a free AI visibility check on your brand and see the answer in about a minute — no account, no card.

Check my AI visibility

Tracking the same questions across six engines every week — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews — is what Geotally does from $19/month.
