AI Overview Tracker
Updated September 7, 2026
Geotally's AI Overview tracker checks whether Google's AI Overview appears for the questions your buyers ask, whether it names your brand, whether it cites your site as a source, and which competitors it names instead. It runs on a schedule and shows the change week over week.

Google writes an answer above the ten blue links. Your rank report cannot see inside it. Search Console does not split "we were cited in the AI Overview" from "we ranked sixth underneath it", so the surface deciding what a searcher reads first is the one your default reporting is blind to.
That is the gap this page is about.

What we record
![]()
Every check produces four facts and one comparison. They are deliberately narrow, because a vague "visibility score" is not something you can act on.
Overview present. Did Google generate an AI Overview for this query at all? Plenty of queries still do not trigger one, and the set changes by topic and by week. Coverage tells you which of your topics Google has decided to answer itself.
Brand named. Are you in the text of the answer? This is the baseline number. If you are named in 2 of 12 tracked questions, that is your starting line.
Cited as a source. Are you one of the linked sources beside the overview? A citation is a stronger and more durable win than a name-drop, and the two move independently — brands get named without being cited, and cited without being named.
Competitors named. Who shows up instead of you, or alongside you. You set the competitor list; we log every appearance against it.
Framing and change over time. How you are described — a top pick, a cheaper option, an afterthought — and whether any of the above moved since last week. The change column is the one people actually open on a Monday.
Nothing here is a proprietary score. They are counts, and you can check any of them by hand. The tracker exists because checking twelve questions by hand every week, in clean sessions, is an afternoon you will not get back.
What the data looks like
Two honest examples, both from our own systems rather than a case study we cannot show you.
The category leaderboards. Every Monday at 05:00 UTC, Geotally asks the AI engines the buying questions for ten software categories — CRM, web hosting, accounting, HR and payroll, and six others — and tallies which brands get named. The output is public at /ai-visibility. In CRM, HubSpot, Pipedrive and Zoho were named in 100% of answers. In web hosting it was Bluehost, Hostinger and SiteGround. That is the same measurement the tracker runs against your own prompts, just aimed at a category instead of a brand.
Our own result. The first time we pointed the free scan at Geotally itself, for the category "AI visibility tracking tools", ChatGPT named us in 0 of 3 answers. We shipped that number rather than hiding it, because it is the point of the product. You cannot fix a gap you have not measured, and a tool that only ever reports good news is not a measuring instrument.
Run the same free check on your brand — three buying questions, no account, no card.
Beyond Google
AI Overviews are one surface. Your buyers also open ChatGPT, and a growing number of them ask Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot the same purchase questions they used to type into Google.
Geotally runs your prompts across all six of those engines and puts the results in one dashboard, so the AI Overview number sits next to the ChatGPT number instead of in a separate tool. Every engine is included on every plan. There is no per-engine upcharge and no add-on to unlock Claude.
That last sentence is worth checking against the market, because add-on pricing is the norm rather than the exception. Otterly's plans cover four engines and bill Claude, Gemini and Google AI Mode as extras. LLM Pulse includes five models and prices Claude, Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek as add-ons from €10 per model per month. PromptRush covers five and charges $39–$129/mo for Claude. Peec's self-serve plans let you choose three models. Every one of those figures is dated and sourced at the bottom of this page.
What it costs
$19 a month. AI Overview tracking is in that plan, not above it.
| Plan | Price | Prompts | Cadence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $19/mo | 5 | Weekly runs |
| Growth | $59/mo | 15 | 3 runs per prompt each week |
| Agency | $349/mo | 50 | Daily runs, per-brand engine mix |
All three include the six engines, gap detection, Action Plan drafts, one-click WordPress publishing, and citation-win detection. Starter and Growth carry a 7-day free trial — no charge until day 7, cancel any time, and checkout happens online without a sales call. There is no permanent free tier; the trial is the try-before-you-buy.
For context on where $19 sits: Profound's Starter is $99/mo for three engines and Growth is $399/mo for the same three, both at annual-billing rates. HubSpot's AEO tracker is $50/mo for 25 prompts across three engines. Otterly's entry plan is $29/mo for 15 prompts. Keyword.com sells a standalone AI Visibility plan from $9.80/mo for 20 credits. Those are prices, not judgements — pick the one that matches the job you have.
Set up in three steps
![]()
1. Add your buyer questions. Not your brand name — the question a customer types before they know your brand exists. "Best CRM for a small law firm." "Affordable payroll software for 20 staff." Five prompts is enough to get a real baseline on Starter.
2. Pick your engines and competitors. Google AI Overviews plus whichever of the other five matter to your buyers. Name three to five competitors so the answers have something to be measured against.
3. Read the weekly diff. The first run is your baseline. From there you get movement: which questions started naming you, which stopped, which competitor entered. When Geotally finds a question where you should appear and do not, it drafts the answer-shaped article to close the gap and can publish it to your WordPress in one click.
Setup takes about ten minutes. The first results land on your next scheduled run.
What it does not do
Four honest limits, so you can rule us out quickly if we are the wrong fit.
It does not guarantee you into an AI Overview. Nobody can. Google decides what the summary says and which sources it cites, and no vendor has a lever on that. What a tracker gives you is the feedback loop — a baseline, a change you made, and whether the answer moved. The work in between is content and third-party coverage, the same as it has always been.
Five prompts is five prompts. Starter tracks five buying questions. If you run a 200-keyword content programme, that is Growth or Agency, and there are tools on the market that will sell you fifty prompts on one engine for less than we charge for five on six. We traded prompt volume for engine coverage deliberately, and it is the wrong trade for some teams.
Weekly is not real-time. Starter runs once a week. If you need to watch an overview change within hours of publishing, that is Agency's daily cadence, and even then AI Overviews drift on their own schedule rather than yours.
No free plan. There is a 7-day trial and a free one-off check. There is no permanent free tier, because every engine call costs us money and a free tier that runs six engines on a schedule is a tier we would have to make bad on purpose.
FAQ
What is an AI Overview tracker? A tool that monitors whether Google's AI-generated summary appears for a given search, whether it names or cites your brand, and which competitors it names. It repeats the same checks on a schedule so you can see change over time rather than one snapshot.
Can I check AI Overviews manually instead? Yes, and it is worth doing once. Open an incognito window, sign out of Google, search a real buyer question, and read who is named and cited. We wrote the full method up in How to Track Google AI Overviews. It stops being practical at about ten questions checked weekly, because overviews vary by wording, region and day, so one check is a snapshot rather than a trend.
Does Google Search Console show AI Overview impressions separately? No. GSC folds AI Overview impressions into regular Search data. It will not tell you whether you were cited inside the summary or ranked below it.
Which engines does Geotally track? Six: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. All six are on every plan with no per-engine fee.
Is there a free plan? No. There is a 7-day free trial on Starter and Growth, and a free one-off AI visibility check that runs three buying questions through ChatGPT with no account and no card.
How often does it run? Weekly on Starter, three times per prompt per week on Growth, daily on Agency. Weekly is enough to establish a baseline and see movement. Daily earns its keep when you are actively running a GEO campaign and want to see a change land.
How many prompts do I need? Five real buying questions beat fifty variations of your brand name. Start with the questions your sales calls keep repeating, then add the ones the tracker shows a competitor winning.
Can I track more than one brand? Agency at $349/mo is built for it, with daily runs and a per-brand engine mix. Starter and Growth are single-brand plans.
